Opening convocation on September 9 marked the start of Emma’s 196th school year. Inspired by an audience of 308 incredible students and our talented faculty, I spoke about the “right stuff”—our quest for excellence in what we do and some key ingredients for success. It was also my great pleasure at convocation to honor two of our extraordinary faculty members, Linda Maier, who was appointed to the Homer L. Dodge Chair in Science, and Carmel Schettino, who was appointed to the Henry L. Thompson Chair in Mathematics. Please take a moment to read their citations on the EmmaNow blog.

With the opening of school behind us, we are now preparing for a rapidly approaching reunion weekend. As in the past two years, we will gather for a community event. Women, Power, and Place: Celebrating a Century on Mount Ida will take place Saturday, October 10, 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., in the gymnasium. This is a required event for all students. Parents are cordially invited to join us. During the celebration we will honor our Distinguished Alumnae Award recipients and enjoy several student performances. We will also pause for a moment to reflect on the people and places that make Emma Willard the remarkable school it is. For a century students have been privileged to call Mount Ida home; it is only fitting that we take a moment to consider how grateful we are to be here. Finally, and most importantly, please join us for Parent Days, October 16–17, and experience firsthand your daughter’s life at Emma Willard. On Friday, visit classes, socialize with other parents, get acquainted with your daughter’s friends and classmates, attend athletic events, and enjoy a showcase of Emma talent. On Saturday, you’ll have opportunities to meet her advisor, teachers, houseparent, and coaches. These individuals are available only during the scheduled hours, and it is your daughter’s responsibility to make these appointments in advance. View the schedule and register here for Parent Days.
