A teacher at Emma Willard since 1975, Christine A. Carroll holds the Julia Howard Bush Chair in English. She earned a B.A. at Ursuline College and an M.A. at Goddard College. Ms. Carroll is the costumer for Revels and the costumer and coordinator of May Day. Her extracurricular activities include writing, sewing, gardening, and crafts. “I consider learning a lifelong process, and believe that within each of us there are amazing resources simply waiting to be released.”

Megan Danyliw received her B.A. from Brown University. While attending Brown, she worked in the dining services as a student supervisor, in the Education Department, Undergraduate Group, as a student coordinator, and was a member of the varsity women’s crew team. Megan has also been a senior resident assistant and program coordinator at the Center for Talented Youth in Baltimore.

Alumna Nina Fleishman '72 has been employed by the school since 1990. She holds a B.A. from Macalester College and an M.S. from the State University of New York at Albany. She also serves as the international student advisor and is advisor to the Foreign and American Student Organization.

Clare Mackenzie received a B.A. in English from Haverford College and an M.A. in English literature from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College. She returns to Emma Willard from Sandy Spring Friends School where, for the past four years, she taught English, coached varsity cross country and track, developed and directed the annual ninth-grade drama project, and was a member of the resident faculty.

Todd Matthew and his wife, Sabrina Putnam, arrived at Emma Willard in 2000 and have two children, Betsy and Calvin. Todd teaches freshman and sophomore English, A.P. English, and Shakespearean Tragedy. He also coaches varsity softball and serves as the faculty advisor to the school’s award-winning art and literary magazine, Triangle. In years past, Todd has led Emma ski trips to the Austrian Alps, served on the conduct review committee, and chaired the English department. He has also taught junior English, Southern literature, 17th Century Comedy, and Social Criticism in American Literature. In his spare time, he likes to spend time with his family in Maine, canoe, play Scrabble, read (both Shakespeare and Madeline), cook, watch RPI hockey, and ski in the Alps.

Meg McClellan has taught at Emma Willard since 1996. She received a B.A. from Connecticut College and an M.A. from Middlebury College. She serves as co-chair of the Conduct Review Committee.

Kathleen McNamara has taught English at Emma Willard since 1987 and holds the Margaret Wing Dodge Chair in Literature. She earned an A.B. from Bryn Mawr College and an M.A. from the University College at Dublin. Currently she teaches English I, English III, and senior electives, which reflect her interest in contemporary literature as a re-reading of the canon and in genre study, especially satire and comedy. In addition, she serves as a facilitator for faculty professional development and teaches an Ultimate Frisbee class in the after school physical education program.

When she isn’t reading student writing, Ms. McNamara enjoys running on the track with her husband, Larry Lichtenstein, and dreaming of the fuchsia-lined bohereens of Connemara.

Jonathan came to Emma Willard in 2001. He holds a B.A. and M.A. from Trinity College, Dublin, and an M.S. from the University at Albany. He first taught in the ESL program and now teaches freshman and sophomore English. He also leads the yoga class at Emma. In addition, he is the advisor to Interact, a community service club. When he is not in class or on the yoga mat, he loves to hike wherever there are mountains.

Frances O’Connor graduated from Fordham University with a B.A. in English and received her M.A. in Anglo-Irish literature and drama from University College, Dublin. She has taught rhetoric and composition and world literature courses to undergraduate students at Mercyhurst College and English language arts at Dr. Sun Yat Sen Intermediate School. Frances also taught English language arts and Japanese at the Foreign Language Academy of Global Studies. In addition, she is an educational content writer and editor for Scholastic, Inc.
