Emma Willard Alumnae

Alumnae Association Council (AAC)

Established in 1892, the Emma Willard School Alumnae Association provides a vital link between the school and its diverse and loyal graduates. Alumnae Association Council members meet three times a year on campus (in October, February, and May) and serve three-year terms (limited to three terms).

Empower a girl…transform the world!

I have learned so much since my reacquaintance with Emma Willard School. As a member of the Alumnae Association Council over the last four years and most recently as president of the ACC, I have seen the changes at Emma since my time and better understood the triumphs and challenges the school experiences today. Through it all, I have been so inspired!

Unquestionably, Emma Willard remains the finest in girl’s education worldwide; this isn’t to say it is for every girl, but for those girls for whom it is a good fit, it is a tremendous opportunity. Whether you graduated just over a decade ago or (as my mother reminds me) over a quarter century ago, it is still the place that launched us. In speaking with fellow alumnae recently, we talked about how Emma, despite some changes, is still a place that shaped our future.

Emma today is a place where alumnae can continue conversations about societal, environmental, and political issues—not literally on Mount Ida, but through our connections to each other and by knowing about the exciting opportunities at Emma Willard. Last year Greg Mortenson, co-author of Three Cups of Tea spoke to the community; this year Emma Willard welcomed Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, co-authors of Half the Sky. EMMA magazine is filled with provocative, compelling stories that resonate with many of us. Emma brings the world to us and challenges us to think differently and take action, and it spurs us to consider issues and talk about them out loud. It reminds us that we can be the change we want to see in the world, by making the connections that will make our community strong. Not just with our classmates, but young alumnae and students who can connect with us as role models and sounding boards (mentors and coaches) in decisions about college, graduate school, careers, and life.

By graduating from Emma, we are not just alumnae, we are a part of a dynamic future that we should not take lightly. I strongly encourage everyone who has passed through “ye gray walls” of Mount Ida to reconnect and get involved. Whether you know me or not, as someone who comes from a place that you have all been, trust me when I say, you’re not going to want to miss this!

“No matter what she’s doing, when or where, a girl with an Emma Willard background will be a presence in the conversation. Whether writing a novel, performing neurosurgery, or serving on the PTA, she’ll do it in an intelligent, articulate, significant way.” Trudy Hanmer, Associate Head of School
