History of Emma Willard School

"School is very important, but it’s not just academics. The school is a lot more than that. " — Eve ’04

Omma Willard's history is central to who we are. We were the first school in the country to provide girls the same educational opportunities given to boys. Back in 1814, Emma Hart Willard bravely broke the mold. She believed young women deserved diverse subject matter and academic rigor in line with their ambitions and abilities. The school she founded champions individual opinion and instills confidence. And we do this in a setting straight out of the movies, with a striking hilltop campus that distinguishes our school from all others.

Emma Willard is a school in good hands. The Board of Trustees is involved and informed by an activeAlumnae Council and institutional leadership that includes Head of School Trudy Hall and a superior team of administrators.
